Capping off a project that began back in 2011, the Jackson United Methodist Church in Jackson Township, New Jersey has officially gone solar! The system was completed in the first two weeks of January, and finally turned on back on January 30th, finally completing a project that began nearly six years prior.
The savings have been immense for the local church, which opened the doors to their current facility back in the year 2000. Pastor Joe Tiedmann said “We are estimating saving $200.00 to $300.00 per month on our electric bill which is redirected into funding our vision and programs. Over the course of the next 15 years, we estimate over $50,000 being poured into ministry and mission.”
The church began the project to set an example to both its own members and to other churches in the area of what it means to be a “good steward of the earth” by caring for the environment. The church regularly has about 125 people attend each Sunday, and has nearly 300 members in total.
Funding the Project
When the church’s Board of Trustees decided to go ahead with the project, the church members reviewed over 20 companies before selecting Sea Bright Solar. Pastor Tiedmann said “Sea Bright was unique because we met directly with Brian Kelly, president of the company, and they provided the church with the greatest savings and were genuinely interested in helping us with our mission and our vision.”
Pastor Tiedmann stated that the Church chose to go with a Purchase Power Agreement to pay for the solar system. The benefits of one of these agreements is that there is no money up front from the church while reducing their utility bills to allow them to repurpose their funds for church-related purposes.
In a purchase power agreement, Sea Bright Solar fronts the cost of the solar installation project, and power generated by the panels once they are completed is sold to the church at a significantly lower rate than local utilities. The result is a relationship which allows the church to save money and help the environment by transitioning to renewable energy. “I think this makes sense for every church and parsonage. It reduces the carbon footprint and allows churches to repurpose the money into their ministry and into their vision,” said Pastor Tiedmann.
